I recently received the Percy Jackson series for Christmas and I was so excited to read it. I’ve read the first book in the series and I really liked it and the second book did not disappoint me.

If you haven’t read the first book of this series you should definitely go do that right now. In case you have read the first book I’ll give you a quick summary of this book and the first one in the series. So Percy Jackson is a half-blood meaning he’s half human and half god. Percy ends up going to a special summer camp for half-bloods in which he embarks on a quest to retrieve Zeus’s oh so special lightning bolt. Flash forward one year and Percy is at a new school towards the end of the school year when he receives news that the tree that protects Camp Half-Blood has been poisoned. And so the quest to find a way to protect the camp begins.

Sea of Monsters starts off with our lovable Percy getting in trouble at school because of his Half-Blood status. In this book we also get some new characters, Tyson and Tantalus. I absolutely love Tyson he’s possibly the cutest cyclopes ever and he’s so sweet. Tantalus made me laugh at multiple parts, I can feel his pain for not being able to eat or drink anything. We also still have our original cast of characters as well, except Grover has been kidnapped by a cyclopes and almost gets married off. Annabeth and Percy are also featured as well as Mr. D (he can never get Percy’s name right).

Sea of Monsters was pretty action packed throughout. The only problem I had was that it seemed to go by so fast. Annabeth and Percy eventually go on a quest (that’s sort of not theirs) in order to save Grover and the Camp. I love Riordan is able to incorporate the elements of mythology into the series so well. This book is also very funny at times.

Some parts of the plot didn’t work well for me though. Such as when Percy is turned into a Guinea pig, although it was cute I don’t think it was necessary for the plot. The part where Annabeth listen s to the sirens was also another part of the book that wasn’t necessary. But these scenes were very few and didn’t affect my rating too much.

Sea of Monsters also ends with a very suprising twist. It definitely changes the prophecy everyone keeps talking about. It also leaves you with tons of questions and it makes you want to pick up the next book.

Overall I really liked Sea of Monsters and I can’t wait to start the third book in this series.
